Jorma Taccone was born on March 19, 1977, in Berkeley, California. He is the son of Suellen Ehnebuske and Tony Taccone. He is named after his father's friend, Jorma Kaukonen, the guitarist of the band Jefferson Airplane. He grew up with his brother, Asa, who became a musician and is a member of the band Electric Guest. Jorma's father worked as the artistic director of the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Taccone has Italian and Puerto Rican heritage. After finishing high school, he attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He studied theater and graduated with his bachelor's degree in the subject in 2000.

Taccone began his career as a production staff member on the show "Spin City" from 2001 to 2002. From 2003 to 2005, he was a writer and producer on the web series "The 'Bu." He also worked as a writer for the 2004 and 2005 MTV Movie Awards.
