Media star Anita Nderu has expressed her frustration regarding her purportedly exorbitant annual electricity bill of KSh 383,847.
Nderu asked Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) to explain the 'unrealistic' spike in the bills despite her family maintaining their consumption rate.
"This is our electricity bill for this year. When I checked the bill this month, I was shocked! Please note that nothing has changed in our consumption all year! In fact, in the months that we aren't even home, our bill is higher than the months we are. @KenyaPower_Care, explain, please!" she lamented.

The celebrity posted a snapshot on her X account, mentioning that the bill is much higher when they are away compared to when they are home.
Nderu discloses her monthly electricity bill
Nderu explained that her monthly bill has been between KSh 8,000 and KSh 9,000, resulting in less than KSh 100,000 a year.
"For context, our bill used to be around KSH 8,000 - 9,000," she disclosed.
Her attempts to get clarification on the sudden increase have been fruitless, as the parastatal has made countless excuses and still forced her to pay the bills.
"I already tried taking pictures, following up, etc.; they have given me countless excuses to explain the bill and still forced me to pay it. Our building does not allow us to use the token system," she added.
Netizens offer alternative option
Netizens sympathised with the mother of one, asking her to consider installing a solar panel
@emperorpantha said:
"Would you consider solar, especially if you live in your compound? From your math, that amount is almost enough to install solar home systems that will cut your bills by up to 80%."

Kenyans react after KPLC increases token charges
In October, a section of Kenyans took to social media to express their disappointment after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) hiked token charges.
The energy regulator increased the charge per unit by 18.7%, from KSh 4.16 to KSh 4.94 per unit.
"KPLC, why are you robbing us? Last week, I bought a token of KSh 3K and got 95.45 units, and today it has been reduced to 90.89 units. Is this bottom-up? This is daylight robbery," said @Majormohaa.
"Something is definitely up with KPLC. My power consumption hasn't increased, but I seem to be buying tokens every other day. Literally going to work to pay taxes and buy tokens," @Imoonar observed.
