Former Chief Justice (CJ) David Maraga has opened up about moments people tried to bribe him to sway judgment in courts while teaching about integrity in church.

The CJ Emeritus was at Lavington SDA, where he cautioned people not to be used and to have values. He recalled moments he had to stand on his integrity.

"Something is brought, and you are told can you sign here? You know what that means, but you sign because you are getting your cut isn't it? At times some clients want you to lie for them, they just buy you. They buy you to do what they want. And as soon as you do that, they have no regard for you," he said.

"When I was in the High Court in Mombasa in 2005, I made some orders that irritated some people. I restrained the coming in of sugar, worth more than KSh 30 million. The owners were frantic, they wanted sugar released immediately, so they went looking for a lawyer who is my friend and you know what they asked him, tell that judge to quote his price. This man knew me and said that man has no price," he further narrated.

Maraga on importance of integrity

According to Maraga, the businessmen could not believe that no amount of money would sway his decision.

"If you agree to be used, you are just a doormat. We are more than that. Be integrity champions," he added.

He also mentioned that when people know you are honest, they look for you when they have next jobs or need proper guidance on something.
