Nairobi - In March 2023, President William Ruto announced a bold plan to cut the cost of cooking gas cylinders by more than half by June 2023.
The head of state promised that a six-kilogram gas cylinder would cost between KSh 300 and KSh 500.
“From June 2023, a 6 kg cylinder of cooking gas will cost KSh 500 or KSh 300,” Ruto said as the crowd cheered.

William Ruto's transformative agenda of green energy
Ruto said the price reduction would ensure a large number of people move to clean energy, ditching firewood, charcoal, and paraffin.
As the year comes to an end, Kenyans have reprimanded Ruto over his promise.
TUKO.co.ke sampled some of the reactions from Kenyans who expressed their disappointment.

"A 6 kg gas cylinder was to retail for KSh 500, according to William Ruto. What happened?"
@magwaz3 commended:
"It's very immoral for a president who claims to be a man of God to openly lie that a 6 kg gas cylinder will retail for KSh 300, then go as if he never said anything. Anyway, merry Christmas to all."
@AllanObare4·wrote:
"A 6 kg gas cylinder used to take a comrade an entire semester. Siku hizi inachukuwa, one month. What is actually the problem? Ama sikuizi tunajaziwa gas nusu?"
@ComedianFrisco said:·
"The 6 kg gas cylinder was a scam, Taifa gas was propaganda, and KSh 300 was the housing levy."
@Rober_utd opined:
"It's going to be tough for people using a 6 kg gas cylinder. We wait,"
TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that one key message Ruto upheld in the run-up to the hotly contested August 9, 2022, polls was his relationship to people at a grassroots level.
William Ruto marks one year in office
For instance, the then-Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate promised to focus economic relief programmes on the lower class and make the common person a major priority in his administration.
Having come from humble beginnings, Ruto described himself as a hustler and promised to empower Kenyans at the bottom, knowing firsthand what it's like to be at that level.
But as Kenyans mark one year since the August 9, 2022, polls, most of his pledges are unfulfilled as Ruto confronts the reality of government and balancing competing national interests.
