The girls, quick to act, informed their parents, who promptly alerted the Kirinyaga police.
Local residents also reached out to the area chief, reporting that a baby was found crying in the bush.
Initial hopes that the mother might be nearby were dashed, leading the community to suspect intentional abandonment.
Infant taken to Kerugoya Hospital
“We first thought that the abandoned baby’s mother was around. After some time, we suspected that she dumped the baby and left,” shared a concerned resident.
Kirinyaga police officers arrived promptly, securing the area and ensuring the baby's safety.
The infant was then transported to Kerugoya Referral Hospital, where medical professionals confirmed his well-being.
"The baby is in good hands. The nurses at the hospital attended to the infant," reassured John Kiama from the Kirinyaga County Fire Department.
Sakaja rescues infant abandoned by mother
In a related story, Governor Johnson Sakaja came to the aid of a baby left by his mother unattended in a dilapidated house in Embakasi West.
Gladys Atieno's neighbours raised the alarm after finding the newborn baby on a wet mattress with the mother nowhere to be seen.
The 43-year-old woman left the infant six hours after giving birth to go and look for money to pay for rent and food for her three young children.
Atieno told TUKO.co.ke that when the mother returned, she found deeply concerned neighbours carrying the baby.
