Commercial networks in banditry

In the past, cattle raiding was once part of initiation practices; however, in recent years, banditry has burgeoned into a network of organised crime with diverse actors.

Assessing the government's achievements in the fight against banditry on boxing day, the CS for Interior, Kithure Kindiki, said that 2024 will be a decisive year as the government aims to destroy political, cultural, and commercial networks in banditry.

"The incidents of banditry and its debilitating effects on the people of the Northern Rift Valley Region have been contained 70%.
Building on the lessons so far, the Government aims at eradicating the menace of banditry and destroying its political, cultural and commercial networks. 2024 is a decisive year," said Kindiki.

Most of the animals stolen by bandits in the Rift Valley find their way to slaughterhouses in Kenyan cities, earning billions for those commercially invested in banditry.

Kindiki orders fencing of caves

Earlier on TUKO.co.ke, The government announced that it had successfully flushed out bandits from their hideouts in parts of Baringo county.

To prevent the return of the bandits to their hideouts, which include hills, caves and forests, Interior Coordination Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki ordered the fencing of the sites.

"Bandits have been flushed from most of their hideouts that include escarpments, hills and gorges. We have to ensure the criminals don't regroup and return to the hideouts. To achieve this, the areas will be fenced and security agents permanently deployed there," Kindiki said.
