They had planned to use the money to buy raw materials for their lifelong project of owning rental houses.

"We withdrew money around 1pm because the queue was a bit long. We checked the vehicles; it wasn't too fully packed, so I suggested that instead of waiting, let's go and board another matatu," said Chebii.

She explained that they alighted at the junction in Sobea and took a boda boda home. She was carrying the bigger portion of the cash in her handbag while her husband had KSh 10,000 in his pocket.

It was a distance from the junction when they were stopped by a gang of five men who threatened to kill them.

"We came about 3km from Sobea when a car approached us from the front, and they said, "Get off!" So, we alighted. They told us to lie down, threatening to kill us. I asked, "Why do you want to kill us?" and they had guns. There were around five people. Consequently, my husband was forced into the car," she narrated.

What happened to Langat

His husband said he was pushed and slapped once by the robbers as they made him sit inside the car and drove off.

Langat said they told him not to look at anyone or else he would be killed before they stopped and put a sack over his head.

They later dumped him in a pit, where he woke up and found his wife's empty handbag next to him with KSh 2,000 in his pocket.

Rongai OCPD Wilberforce Sicharani confirmed the couple had reported the case, adding that the police were working to arrest the suspects.

"We have recorded the statement from Benson and his wife, and we have also spoken to my DCIO, who is currently outside. We've provided them with the number, and they are continuing to search to see if we can locate those criminals," he said.

Botched Nairobi bank robbery

Elsewhere, police gunned down a knife-wielding man who tried to rob an Equity Bank branch in the Nairobi West area in broad daylight.

In the incident, the man attempted to grab the cash delivered to the facility by G4S security personnel.

Police said in the scuffle, the suspected robber stabbed three people, two security officers and a bank customer, who were rushed to the hospital.
