Petroleum Outlets Association of Kenya chairman Martin Chomba has said Kenyans should expect a slight drop in fuel prices in the latest review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

EPRA is set to announce new pump prices on Thursday, December 14, effective for the next month.

Speaking exclusively to TUKO.co.ke, Chomba noted that international oil prices had declined, and hence this should be reflected at the pump.

"What Kenyans should expect from EPRA is that prices ought to come down given that we have had a downward trend in international pricing.

Moreover, the fact that we buy petroleum products a month or two months earlier, the prices ought to go down but not by a very big percentage in December. But in January, we expect the prices should go down by a bigger chunk, a more drastic drop, " Chomba said.

What are the current fuel prices?

In the last review on Wednesday, November 14, EPRA retained the cost of petrol but reduced the price of diesel and kerosene by KSh 2.

Petrol retails at KSh KSh 217.36 in Nairobi, while diesel costs KSh 203.47. Kerosene, used by poor households, is sold at KSh 203.6.

Fuel prices were on an upward trajectory in the months of September and October, forcing Kenyans to dig deeper into their pockets.

Why High Court barred EPRA from increasing prices

The High Court of Kenya granted conservatory orders preventing EPRA from an upward review of the fuel prices in their monthly review scheduled for today.

On December 10, Kituo Cha Sheria moved to court challenging the regulator's decision to maintain the high prices of petrol and diesel despite a global decrease in prices.

Annette Mbogoh, the director of legal affairs at Kituo Cha Sheria, asserted that the current fuel prices in Kenya have reached unprecedented levels, causing widespread economic strain for both individuals and businesses.
