Nakuru - President William Ruto has announced a salary increase for National Youth Service recruits.

During the 87th NYS recruits pass-out parade in Gilgil on Friday, December 8, the head of state reminded the recruits that he had committed to reviewing their working conditions.

Ruto disclosed that from the next financial year, they would be entitled to a 40% salary increase as presented by former chief justice David Maraga's National Taskforce on Improvement of Terms and Conditions of Service and other Reforms for Members of the National Police Service and Kenya Prisons Service.

"Let me report here that when I was here last year, I did commit that we were going to include the National Youth Service in the review of salaries and working conditions of both the police, and the prisons, and I committed that we are going to include the NYS, and we did.
Let me confirm that as the report was presented to me and to the government, National Youth Service, beginning the next financial year for three years, their salaries will be increased by 40%," Ruto said.

What are Ruto's plans for NYS

The president also revealed that he had approved a raft of changes within the NYS that would see 200 more cadets added to their ranks.

He explained that the cadets would enhance NYS's capacity to train more recruits for various sectors.

"Let me also confirm, that I have approved the modernisation And the re-engineering of the National Youth Service so that in February next year, we will have an additional 200 cadets that will be trained to enhance the capacity of the National Youth Service to train more servicemen and women as we use NYS to grow the pool of young people that are job, ready, that are ready to take up responsibilities in different sectors," he added.

NYS announces job vacancies for Kenyans in UK

Earlier, NYS graduates were presented with a unique opportunity to work in the United Kingdom's agricultural industry.

The UK's Seasonal Worker Scheme (SWS) sought NYS graduates with qualifications in agriculture to fulfil seasonal positions within the horticulture sector.

This initiative would serve the UK's labour demand and provide a platform for skill enhancement and employment opportunities for Kenyan youths.
