On December 5, Kenya and India signed five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the goal of strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

Under these agreements, the collaboration will span various sectors, encompassing health, energy, ICT, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs), and the marketing of avocados.

President William Ruto, who is currently engaged in bilateral discussions with Indian prime minister Narendra Modi during his visit to India, shared on his official X app account that as part of the accord, India has committed to opening its markets to Kenyan products.

"Witnessed the signing of five memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing our bilateral relations. I welcomed the decision by India to open its market to avocados from Kenya and the continued assistance in health, energy, ICT sectors and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises," Ruto tweeted.

Support to Kenya

The president also thanked India for $250 million (KSh 38.3 billion) for supporting Kenya in the mechanisation of agriculture and other interventions in health.

"I want to assure you that we will immediately embark on programs that have already been agreed on so that we can leverage on this facility to provide the much-needed services for the people of Kenya.
This facility is going a long way in delivering our commitment to the people of Kenya, especially in the space of health and food security as we deal with the challenges of cost of living, ensuring that we produce enough food using mechanization. To get our food security situation" Ruto said.

Changing financial systems

The meeting between the two leaders also involved discussions that will pave the way for collaborative efforts between the two nations to bring about reforms in the global financial system.

The aim is to ensure that the Global South gains access to the necessary resources for development, thereby transforming lives at a fair and equitable cost.

James Orengo signs MOUs to benefit lake region counties

In other news related to Ruto's trip to India, a delegation from the Lake Region Economic Block led by James Orengo, apprised Ruto of the collaborative projects set to enhance Kenya's infrastructure and energy sectors after signing MOUs for SGR extension and a solar park with India.

"I led a delegation from Lake Region Economic Block (LREB) including Governors Stephen Sang of Nandi and Dr. Hillary Barchok (Bomet) to appraise President William Ruto on the MOUs LREB has signed with Indian government ministries and departments ahead of a meeting between President Ruto and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India," Orengo tweeted.
