Nairobi - Winnie Odinga is recuperating after being subjected to surgery after sustaining an injury during the recently concluded inter-parliamentary games in Kigali, Rwanda.

Why did Winnie Odinga undergo surgery?

Winnie, a Kenyan representative in the Arusha-based East African Legislative Assembly, was among the participants in the sporting event, bringing together lawmakers from the East African Community (EAC) member countries.

The lastborn child of Kenya's longstanding opposition leader Raila Odinga injured the back of her shin prompting a medical operation.

She was incapacitated and thus unable to make it to her native home in Bondo to unite with her family during the festive season.

"Some of you have been asking why I’ve been soo quiet lately, I ruptured my achilles tendon during the inter-parliamentary games in Kigali. I’m all good after surgery but I’ll be laying low for a bit. Gutted I won’t make it to Bondo this Christmas," she said.

Meanwhile, Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya recently alleged that MPs participating in the East Africa Community inter-parliamentary games in Rwanda could not cover their accommodation expenses.

Why were MPs struggling with bills?

The first-timer in the Kenyan National Assembly laid the blame on President William Ruto.

He wondered why his colleagues would be struggling with their bills as Ruto splashed millions in the Kimalel goat auction and cultural festival.

"I saw yesterday that the president was flourishing and buying goats. It is okay to buy the goats. But as members of parliament, we came out here in Rwanda to participate in the EALA games, which is so surprising that even MPs have not been given anything. We have not paid our hotels, and they want us to compete," he asserted.

The lawmaker stated that it would not be fair to spend their funds on settling hotel bills while their constituents face hardships during the festive season.

"How can a whole parliament be here in Rwanda struggling with bills? I cannot spend my money meant for a tournament for the Mumias East youth and Christmas gifts on settling the hotel bills. Or should I go do the dishes to settle the bills?" he posed.
