Concord: A Hilarious Tale Of Video Game Failure And Trophy Hunting

Video game failures are not anything new. Whether it’s a AAA attempt or an indie darling failing to meet expectations, we have seen it all in this industry. However, I’ve never seen a huge disaster like Concord and its wannabe AAA live-service shooter dreams. I’ve already talked about why Concord couldn’t find any players. On September 3, 2024, we learned that Sony is preparing to shut down Concord due to the utterly poor response. Amidst this chaos, there is one thing the limited number of players are doing that caught my attention, and it is hilarious.

It turns out that several Concord players are grinding for the Platinum trophy in their PSN accounts. Although that is one of the achievements players love to have, Concord’s situation is funny. For those unaware, you can get the Platinum trophy after finishing the game or completing certain objectives. While getting platinum was already hard in Concord due to the lack of players making it hard to find a match, someone ended up getting the trophy.

Ironically enough, the platinum is called “Living Legend”. Who wouldn’t want it right? Especially when they have spent $40 and their valuable time for such a mediocre attempt at paid Overwatch. Well, while the players can get back the money, does the Platinum trophy justify the time spent on the game? Given that platinum is currently ultra-rare with only 0.91% players having it right now, I know PS players would love to have a piece of it.

The game’s low player count made finding matches difficult, yet players continued to grind it. Just for the sake of being on an infamous list of legends. Well, as Concord players are gathering that trophy, they’re doing it in a way I never expected. Concord offers a lot of game modes. However, the Rivals mode offers 3x more XP. So, players boot up their game and jump in rivals to gather experience. And that would have been fine until I saw how they were gaining that XP. It turns out that players have started to kill themselves online to gain XP!

This makes the situation even funnier given the players who want to grab the platinum have only two days left to do so. Players killing themselves for experience points is indeed a first, especially for a game that is about to shut down. Although any achievements related to Concord might not feel enough, the platinum for this game will be a high rarity trophy. While many players are posting their physical copies of the game joking about it, some players are using their life’s valuable time getting platinum in a dead game.

A lot of gamers who got the physical copy just before the Sony news will only have 2 days to get their trophy if they want to. Do you think it is worth it to die every game to collect a platinum for a dead game like Concord that is about to shut down? Would you try to get the trophy if you owned the game? Let me know in the comments below.
