Effortlessly Kill Tasks From The Windows 11 Taskbar: A Complete Guide

Move the Taskbar in Windows 11

Generally, to kill a task and its processes, you need to open the Task Manager on Windows 11. But there is a nifty new way to kill a task from the Taskbar itself, however, it’s hidden under Developer Settings and disabled by default. With the setting turned on, you can simply right-click on any app on the Windows 11 Taskbar and end the task with a click.

That said, you can’t end the task for Windows Explorer (explorer.exe). For that, you will still need to open the Task Manager. It would have been nice if Microsoft added at least a restart option for Windows Explorer in the Taskbar. Nevertheless, follow the steps below to turn on the ability to kill tasks from the Windows 11 Taskbar.

Activating the Task-Killing Feature

To enable the task-killing feature from the Taskbar, you need to adjust some settings in Windows 11. This feature is simple to activate and can significantly enhance your user experience by allowing you to end unresponsive applications quickly.

Step 1: Access Developer Settings

Open the Start menu and search for “Developer settings.” Click to open it. In this section, you will find various options that can enhance your Windows experience, including the ability to kill tasks directly from the Taskbar.

Step 2: Enable the “End Task” Toggle

Once in Developer settings, locate the “End Task” toggle and enable it. This will allow you to quickly end processes by simply right-clicking on their respective apps in the Taskbar. It's a straightforward setting to adjust and can save you time in the future.

Step 3: Using the Feature

With the feature enabled, you can now right-click on any active app in the Taskbar. You should see the “End task” option. Selecting this option will immediately kill the task, freeing up system resources and potentially speeding up your PC. This is especially useful when an application becomes unresponsive.

Testing the Feature

In my testing, this feature worked seamlessly on both the Release Preview channel (Windows 11 24H2) and the Stable channel (23H2). This confirms that it’s a reliable method for managing your applications more effectively.

Limitations of the Task-Killing Feature

Despite this new feature, it’s essential to note that you still cannot end the task for Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) using this method. For that, you will need to open the Task Manager. It would have been beneficial if Microsoft added an option to restart Windows Explorer directly from the Taskbar.

Conclusion: Enhancing Your Windows 11 Experience

Apart from using the new task-killing feature, there are numerous ways to customize and enhance your Windows 11 experience. Whether it’s tweaking settings or exploring new features, staying updated can improve your productivity significantly.
