The Journey From Comic Book Illustrator To Commercial Actor

Last Friday I was sitting in a bar getting ready to watch game three of the World Series when something pretty cool happened. Right after the national anthem was sung, and the military jets did a fly-over, the game cut to commercial. Normally that’s not a big deal. But in this case, the very first commercial that played (for the new Samsung Note) happened to star my friend Josh Breeding. I blurted out “I know that guy!” but everyone was too busy pounding Fireball shots. Fast forward to tonight, and I see the same commercial again. And this time it aired during the first commercial break of LeBron James' homecoming game in Cleveland. Over the last couple of years, it seems like Josh has booked dozens of nationally televised commercials that all tend to air during major television events like the Oscars, the Super Bowl, or the World Series. So what’s that like? Is that a full-time job? And how does someone become a super successful actor in the commercial world? Let’s find out!

I guarantee you’ve seen Josh’s work. Most likely many times. In addition to the Samsung commercial, Josh recently appeared in a spot for Wonka candies where he gives a woman random mad-libbed directions like “So, you’re gonna wanna palm tree up the fish. Keep unicorning till the smiley face of the soccer shoe…” Does that ring a bell? It aired a ton over the last couple of months!

Here’s an ad Josh did for Captain Morgan that I thought was pretty funny:

And here’s a Dominos ad that was actually Josh’s first commercial to air nationally:

You get my point. Josh has beaten insane odds to carve out a nice career in the highly competitive world of commercial acting. And that’s kind of crazy because his original dream was to be a comic book illustrator. So how does someone go from wanting to draw comic books to appearing in commercials? That’s the subject of this week’s Celebrity Net Worth podcast!

Being a successful commercial actor can be a blessing and a curse. Especially for people like the Verizon Guy (Paul Marcarelli), the AT&T girl (Milana Vayntrub), or Flo from Progressive (Stephanie Courtney). But I bet most of us would take that curse and run with it straight to the bank, all day, every day.

Understanding the World of Commercial Acting

Commercial acting is a fascinating field that combines talent, timing, and a bit of luck! It often involves auditioning for roles that may seem small but can lead to significant exposure and financial gain. Actors like Josh have mastered the art of capturing attention in just a few seconds, making their performances memorable. The ability to stand out in a crowded marketplace is crucial.

The Path to Success in Commercial Acting

Many aspiring actors wonder how to make it in the commercial world. While there’s no guaranteed formula, several key strategies can help:

  • Networking: Building connections with industry professionals can lead to more audition opportunities.
  • Auditioning: Regularly attending auditions is crucial to gaining experience and visibility.
  • Training: Taking acting classes can enhance skills and boost confidence.

By focusing on these areas, aspiring actors can increase their chances of landing lucrative commercial roles.

The Importance of Timing and Market Trends

Timing plays a significant role in commercial acting. For instance, certain products may be marketed more aggressively during specific seasons or events, such as the Super Bowl. Understanding market trends can help actors position themselves better for auditions. Staying informed about what brands are looking for can make a big difference in landing roles.

Challenges Faced by Commercial Actors

While commercial acting can be rewarding, it isn’t without its challenges. Actors often face fierce competition, with hundreds of applicants vying for a single role. Additionally, the pressure to deliver a perfect performance in a short amount of time can be daunting. Actors must learn to handle rejection gracefully, as it’s a common part of the industry.

Finding Balance in a Competitive Industry

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential for actors. The fast-paced nature of the industry can lead to stress and burnout if not managed properly. Actors can benefit from developing coping strategies, such as:

  • Setting boundaries: Knowing when to say no to opportunities can protect personal time.
  • Practicing self-care: Regular exercise and hobbies can help reduce stress levels.
  • Seeking support: Connecting with fellow actors can provide encouragement and understanding.

By prioritizing their well-being, actors can sustain long-lasting careers while enjoying their passion.

Final Thoughts on Commercial Acting

Josh's journey from aspiring comic book illustrator to successful commercial actor showcases the unpredictable nature of the entertainment industry. It reminds us that dreams can evolve! Whether you want to act in commercials, films, or pursue another passion, resilience, and adaptability are key. Embrace the journey, learn from every experience, and who knows? You might find yourself in a commercial during the next big game!
