Prime Video’s Fallout TV show has racked up more than 100 million views since its launch. In the process, it has become the second most viewed show on the service, after The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power.
The show racked up 16 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations and has been commissioned for a second series, which will see the cast head to New Vegas. Showrunners have said they can see Fallout running for five series.
Along with HBO’s The Last Of Us, Fallout TV has shown that it is possible to make appealing and critically acclaimed TV out of existing game franchises. Prime Video will be hoping to replicate that success with the upcoming launch of Secret Level: an anthology series of 15 shows based on different classic video games.
The Fallout TV show launched on April 10, 2024. It received positive reviews from critics and viewers, earning it 16 Emmy nominations including for Outstanding Drama Series and Lead Actor In A Drama Series.
Although it only walked away with the award for Outstanding Music Supervision, its success paved the way for Prime Video to sign a second series.
The second series will see the cast heading to New Vegas: the location of the Fallout: New Vegas game, which is widely considered to be one of if not the best in the series. The success of the show also saw Bethesda’s Fallout 76, the most recent iteration of the game franchise, experience a boost in player numbers.
Having enjoyed more than 100 million views since its launch, Fallout is now the second most popular show ever on Prime Video. The only show to best its viewer numbers is The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power.
Season 1 of the fantasy epic has had 150 million views. While Fallout does have some way to go to catch up with the adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece, Rings of Power series 1 launched more than two years ago and likely saw an uptick in viewer figures following the recent airing of the second series.
Fallout has already overtaken the likes of other hugely successful shows including The Boys, Reacher, and Invincible. It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see Lucy, Cooper and the rest of the cast take the title.
A release date for the second series hasn’t been announced. Season 1 had a two-year wait from the start of production to its initial airing, so fans will likely have to wait until at least 2026 to enjoy the next installment.
Meanwhile, Fallout, along with another hugely successful video game adaptation The Last Of Us, has paved the way for more video game conversions. Prime Video is launching Secret Level in December. Secret Level consists of 15 animated shows, each of which is based on the world of one or more video games.
A recent teaser trailer gave us a glimpse of the first episode, which takes place in the world of Unreal Tournament. Other games to be included in the series are Sifu, The Outer Worlds, Pac-Man, and even the ill-fated Concord.
The Fallout TV show was made by Kilter Films and produced by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. It starred Ella Purnell as Lucy, Walton Goggins as Cooper Howard, and Aaron Moten as Maximus.
The show was not based on any of the games but took part in the Fallout universe. It was set several years after the incidents of Fallout 4. Similarly, the second series won’t be based on any of the games from the series, even though it will be set in New Vegas.
