Nairobi - The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has notified motorists of a month-long closure of a section of the Nairobi Southern Bypass.

Affected are the lanes between the Lang'ata and Ngong interchanges.

Why section of Southern Bypass is closed

In a statement published on Wednedsady, December 27, the agency said the installation of a virtual weighbridge along the aforementioned sections had caused the closure.

The part of the road will be unused from December 27 through January 23, 2024.

“The closure will commence this December 27, 2023 to January 23, 2024. This is to allow for construction works for installation of Virtual Weighbridge along the section. To minimize the traffic disruption, the closure will involve one lane of each carriageway at a time,” KeNHA said.

In light of the development, motorists on the route were counselled to keep to one lane of the carriageway during the construction works.

KeNHA called on all the road users to exercise caution while approaching the affected section.

Traffic lights would be installed for safety purposes.

Sections of the Southern Bypass road have been dotted with fatal accidents in the recent past.

The government had sanctioned various measures to mitigate the crashes.

Irregular bumps had been installed on the road between Kikuyu town and the Ngong Interchange as it underwent maintenance.

A fatal accident reportedly caused by the bumps was reported on October 4; three people died on the spot.

Another crash had occurred the previous evening, killing one person of Asian descent.

The bumps ignited an uproar on social media, prompting Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to visit the scene.

Expressway temporarily closed

Elsewhere, Moja Expressway, the company managing the Nairobi Expressway, had announced temporary closure of the road.

The company announced that the road will close on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at the Mlolongo Entrance from 7am to 7pm.

Motorists were advised to use the Syokimau entrance when heading to the Nairobi CBD from Mlolongo.

"We will temporarily close the Mlolongo Entrance from 7am to 7pm. We urge the public to use the Syokimau entrance when heading to the Nairobi CBD from Mlolongo. Apologies for the inconvenience," the statement read in part.
