KASARANI, MWIKI: Gracejoan Gathanga is short of words to thank kind commuters who came together on a rainy evening to save her life.

Gracejoan, a mother to a three-year-old boy, was hit with a severe asthma attack during her commute from work to her house in Mwiki.

She was caught in the rain from her workplace to the stage and even during her two-hour wait at the crowded bus stop.

Due to the biting cold, she started wheezing and was forced to use her inhaler, after which two observant ladies standing nearby noticed her struggle and came to keep her company.

"When the conductor saw me with the inhaler, he stopped the vehicle and allowed the three of us to board, and that's when his humanity started," she recalled.

Godsent conductor

On their journey, the conductor spotted another man with a baby struggling through the rain and stopped to help him without hesitation.

The matatu proceeded to its destination, with passengers rallying around both individuals to ensure they were comfortable.

As they neared their stop in Mwiki, Gracejoan's condition worsened, prompting one of the passengers to call out for assistance.

"I was really straining to breathe. All I remember from then is that I found myself in a different seat surrounded by caring individuals," she continued.

Passengers offered warmth

It also dawned on her that one of the passengers had removed his hoodie and covered her with it since her outfit was drenched.

Amidst the concern, a collective prayer was conducted, fostering a sense of unity among the passengers.

The conductor took proactive measures to ensure Gracejoan's safety, keeping the matatu sealed and providing good ventilation by opening the windows.

Upon reaching Mwiki, the concerned passengers offered to escort Gracejoan and ensure she got home safely.

"I expressed my gratitude and reassured everyone that I could manage on my own. But I have no words to express just how grateful I am," she concluded.

Kenyans paid rent for slum woman

In an earlier story, Kenyans came through for a woman in the Sinai slums who had been thrown out of her rented house.

Mama Ruth was distressed after her landlord threw her belongings out of the house over two months' rent arrears.

Luckily, she had a good neighbour in popular Facebooker Bridgit Atieno, who shared photos of the woman's housewares on the streets.

Touched by her plight, kindhearted Kenyans bought her food, a phone, and a gas cooker and paid three months' rent.
